Members of Congress

Members of the 2023 Congress

How are Representatives Selected?

The Student Body Congress is made up of 31 academic seats, 31 residential seats, and a varying number of multicultural-organization seats. Congress is responsible for establishing academic and residential districts (based on students' schools and places or residence, respectively) and for regularly allocating the 31 academic and 31 residential seats among those districts according to the latest student population numbers. Multicultural organizations can apply for seats in Congress at the beginning of each term, and each admitted organization gets one seat in Congress for one year.

The 31 Representatives from academic districts are publicly elected by the student body every March, along with the Student Body President and Vice President, for one-year terms beginning in April. Every student is a constituent of an academic district and can vote in their district's election.

The 31 Representatives from residential districts are publicly elected by the student body every September for one-year terms beginning in October. Every student is a constituent of a residential district and can vote in their district's election.

Multicultural representatives are appointed by their organization.

What Do My Representatives Do?

Every student enrolled at IU Bloomington, whether undergraduate or graduate, is a constituent of both an academic district and a residential district. Each district is allocated a number of seats based on student population. As a result, each student has multiple Representatives in the Student Body Congress.

Every Representative has an equal voice and vote in Congress, which is the policymaking branch of IU Student Government. Congress is responsible for setting official IUSG policy, directing the implementation of IUSG programs and initiatives, establishing the structures and operational processes of the other branches, and allocating IUSG's annual budget.

Individual Representatives are responsible for being their constituents' voice in student government and advocating on behalf of their constituents with other IUSG officeholders, IU administration, and government officials. Students can find their Representatives' contact information below.
