Associate Justice Application

Each Spring, the Student Body Supreme Court opens associate justice applications to fill vacancies that are expected by the end of the academic year. Associate justices are responsible for interpreting the IUSG governing documents, sitting on student conduct hearings, and overseeing IUSG elections.

The Court will likely meet every Wednesday from 7-8 P.M. All justices are expected to regularly attend these meetings.

The Court recommends drafting responses on a separate document, opposed to working directly on the application. Sometimes, the application may crash mid-session and lose recorded responses.

Why would you like to be an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court? What will you gain from serving on the Court?
One part of the Court’s role is to interpret the IUSG Constitution and Bylaws. If you were a member of the Court and ten percent of the student body signed a petition to amend the Constitution, would you determine that their amendment would become a part of the Constitution? If so, how?
Another part of the Court’s role is to provide student representation during student conduct hearings. If you were a member of the Court, what would you do if you were asked to sit on a conduct hearing of one of your friends?
Describe a time you disagreed with a peer. Why did you disagree, and how did you respond?
In what ways do you think the Court’s decisions should reflect the values of the university community?
