Abolishing Student Government

September 20, 1998

The Student Body Congress voted on this day whether to abolish itself, arguging that the organization does not accomplish anything and that campaigns had ran on the promise to abolish the organization. Congress rejected the resolution. Congress also attempted to abolish the legislative branch in 1999 for similar reasons, which failed.

Association of Big 10 Students

October 4, 1989

The Senate voted on this day to establish student government's participation in the Big 10 Student Association. Today, IUSG remains in the now called Association of Big Ten Students (ABTS) with the same mission as in 1989: to push for federal policy making and to disseminate information and ideas to other student government's in the Big 10.

Grass Roots Initiatives Fund (GRIF)

October 1, 1991

From 1991 to at least 2000, student government set money aside to fund political and social initatives of student organizations in an effort to promote social and political activism. Organizations could broadly receive funding if the activity address local concerns, individual rights and liberties, rights of under represented groups, protecting the environment, promotes peace and justice, or unites students of different political parties.

Underrepresented Student Populations

March 24, 2009

Congress attempted to establish three delegates to represent minority student populations in the legislative branch, which failed by one vote. Today, student government allows any multicultural organization to petititon to have a delegate in the Student Body Congress.
